We always wanted to travel somewhere that not only has vibrant culture and cuisine but also relatively untainted by tourism. We previously traveled to the Caribbean on a big cruise ship which was fun and relaxing, but we didn’t feel like we really experienced an authentic local Caribbean culture with just a few shore excursions. After reading a few travel guides that raved about Cartagena as the “Jewel of the Caribbean”, we were intrigued. After spending a week in the city of Cartagena, Colombia, we were refreshingly delighted and absolutely amazed by our experience. We stayed in the Old City, the historic walled section of the city, and simply got lost, which may sound terrifying for a country that has a stigma to Americans for being unsafe and ruled by violent drug cartels, but instead, we were charmed by the colors and character, flowers and bright entryways that line every street, and we never felt safer. This photogenic city was the perfect place to wander around and we felt inspired to photograph everything at every turn. ” – Evonne + Darren
